NMP: Corrigan Messaging App →

chrisaunmp:

I’ve realised I have not explained just what I am doing after the hangman app. My next idea is to do a instant messaging app. I want to do something similar to BBM where people can send messages to each other for free. This sort of app should draw a lot of people in as my market is that kind of age who need to keep in touch with each other. You see on trains people in suits on their mobiles texting someone. That was also another appeal of Blackberry’s to that market age group as those phones were also good for business people to use.

How BBM works is users get the PIN from each other (you can even get the PIN from a QR code, which is also where I got the idea to use it as part of the campaign) and once they have added each other can start messaging straight away!

So I need to design the interface, got some research of current messaging apps so shouldn’t be a problem!

chrisaunmp:

So I spent all of yesterday getting the newspaper wrap to print and it took me till 5:30 before I could leave. It was worth it though because the result looks gorgeous! Looks quite convincingly like a Metro cover. The wrap was printed onto A2 and cropped down. Above photos are just to show the result, the first is the wrap, wrapped around the actual Metro paper and the ones after are the front/back cover and the inside pages.

After having it printed to scale I can see things in the design that need tweeking. Font-sizes that looked ok onscreen but look too big once on print. The margins on the front page at the subheading need widening too. The cutout mask on the back page needs making smaller, unless there is someone with a large enough head for it haha.

I need to do more advertisements from the book inside too as I repeated the one ad I did. I was thinking either an ad for U.S. Mail as in the paper I wrote an article from the novel where Jimmy gets ran over by one of their vans. Or an ad for Pam’s Wagon Wheel restaurant, again there is an article written about it in their so having an ad for it inside would be good too. I think also thinking of ads that aren’t in one of the stories would be good too because it just feels like it is repeated.

chrisaunmp:

So for the past week I have been working on sorting out the newspaper advertisement. I looked at following the styling from the graphic novel and I started off reworking it perfectly from their. I found the way it was, was too restricting. Because the headlines weren’t big and bold and there was too many articles on one page for just an advert. I had to make up the articles too so 3 pages per page was trying to do too much.

I looked back at the Watchmen wrap and got some good inspiration. I followed a similar grid format and general text hierarchy. This was where the page started to come alive. As you can see from the above images the headlines are much bigger and bolder, creating that READ ME! impact headlines should have. I decided the maximum for articles per page should be two after seeing the Watchmen one as it wasn’t cluttering the page too much and the reader didn’t have too much to read. In the end for the front cover and inlay I used just the one article on both pages as I found these more important I guess.

Something else I found was the red advertisement box, this made it more clear that it is an advert besides the “INSIDE your regular Metro…”.  Which is located at the front of the wrap, and the advertisement box is used on all the pages rather than just the front.

I needed to represent Jimmy Corrigan so I came up with using the superhero mask of his childhood hero. This would be placed in a scene from the film. I needed to test the mask out and this is what I got! I may need to make another one just in case but should be ok!

I bought this wig from Luvyababes today, it’s Andy from Little Britain. I will be turning it into a Jimmy Corrigan wig to create a campaign where you get a Jimmy Corrigan running around!
It was either this, some other balding wig or a complete bald cap. I couldn’t decide so I bought both the Andy one and the bald cap. I tried the bald cap one out myself just for laughs and my God I hated it! The smell, the fact it looked shit when put on and the powder put onto the latex onto my hands… I think the smell and the fact it looked crap made me hate it so.
Anyway the Andy one is ok, just needs a little trimming to look like Jimmy, all I need is the clothes! Sweater vests… Now where can I get those…

Portfolio Site

http://www.chrisau-design.co.uk/

The above is my current website, for the new site I would like to keep the left-hand navigation bar because users can always find the pages they need and my contact details are always on screen. The important thing I find is having my contact details right there. Obviously I will look into ways of redoing this, I used frames originally because of my lack of knowledge before but now I got the skills I need. I would also like to use a slideshow to display my key works on the homepage. I’ve looked into a couple of sites previously but I find I’ve looked into layout too much. The grid system is a little too strict.

I also had some advice from Raw from the portfolio surgery so I will be using his sample as a starting point of sorts. He told me I should lose the midas touch thing and keep it simple and clean. As valuable as industry advice is, I’m thinking whether I should go with it or not. Obviously clean and simple is a good thing but we’ve been taught to add a little difference to it to make our own brand more appealing. From talking to Andy he also said having images open up on screen is bad thing so maybe a lightbox so people can see the image whilst staying within the site.

I really want to push my grade up further so I have to make something better than the Viz site!

I love how Jeremy has such a huge head lol he is very opinionated and just says what he thinks without giving a damn what people think. Definitely reflects how he is the biggest character out of the lot too. The Stig is just awesome and it matches them all perfectly.

Supergym Logo Designs 2

The grappling covers are supposed to be 23m x 6m, thats long… In my research most are square or smaller rectangle shape. Oh well it’s what the client wants. So yeah worked their logo into it, doesn’t look too bad I guess, doesn’t take anything away at the least. WIth the second logo (wings), I changed the flag colours back to normal British flag colour because with the logo the colour blended together and having them contrast makes logo stand out more.

The grappling covers I’m not too happy about, if I had more time I would work them a bit more, add more copy into it, and the arm logo too. Add “Combat Sport Academy” and “MMA, Muay Thai, K1” to the actual logo. With the original designs I had worked to A4 which meant I had to design for the extra length afterwards. I just repeated what I had done in the extra length, it does look ok but you can tell that’s all I did.

Compared with the wings cover, the arm one is by far better. Has more of a tattoo feel to it and looks more like something you’d find in a gym. With the wings one it’s too spacious, the feathers just floating about the place.

Final Thoughts (Springer style!): I did enjoy the brief, the gothic/tattoo part especially as I haven’t looked into these styles much before. Designing a logo for a gym was interesting too, again not an area I’m too familiar with. Grappling covers had me baffled for a bit as the width was extra long and unusual. The incredible size also made it hard to work from home as it slowed my computer down. Every action took twice as long.

Supergym Brief 1 →

chrisauprocon3:

There was a brief to come up with designs for a Gym Logo. They wanted a gothic/tattoo style logo and design for a grappling cover. I felt there was many benefits of doing this brief, first was the fact I never done logo designs for a gym before and second was the gothic/tattoo requirement. I…
